Dairy Lagoon Solids and Odor Management with ProBiotic Scrubber® I

Legendairy Holsteins, LLC has used BioLynceus® ProBiotic Scrubber® I (PBI) as part of its dairy wastewater management program for approximately nine years.

During that period, the dairy temporarily switched to a lower-cost competing product for two years because of challenging dairy market conditions.

According to owner Scott Kuiper, lagoon conditions declined during that time, leading the operation to resume treatment with ProBiotic Scrubber® I.

Changes in Lagoon Solids

Before switching products, the dairy lagoon was reported to contain relatively little accumulated solid material.

During the two years using the alternative treatment, Kuiper observed a significant increase in lagoon solids.

After BioLynceus® ProBiotic Scrubber® I was reintroduced, accumulated solids began to decrease again.

Because lagoon conditions had already deteriorated, recovery occurred gradually rather than immediately.

Maintaining Lower Lagoon Solids

With continued use of PBI, Legendairy Holsteins has reported keeping lagoon solids at lower and more manageable levels.

Reducing accumulated solids has also improved the efficiency of pumping lagoon water to evaporative basins.

This helps the dairy maintain appropriate lagoon levels while supporting overall wastewater management.

Odor Reduction Near Urban Areas

Odor management is also an important concern for the dairy because of nearby urban development.

After ProBiotic Scrubber® I was reintroduced, Kuiper reported an immediate improvement in odor conditions.
