Lot 125® Helps Support Stronger Turfgrass and Sod Production

Woerner Turf in Colorado has used Lot 125® for several years as part of its turfgrass production program.

According to Raul Mota of Woerner Turf, the company has observed stronger root development, improved sod handling, extended harvest windows, faster regrowth, and reduced fertilizer use in areas treated with Lot 125®.

Strong Root Development for Large-Roll Sod

Woerner Turf was asked to provide approximately 55,000 square feet of large-roll sod without netting for a customer project.

Because big-roll sod requires a dense and well-developed root system to remain intact during harvesting and installation, the company selected turf that had been grown with Lot 125®.

Mota reported that the sod maintained its structural integrity throughout the project and that the entire 55,000-square-foot installation was completed in approximately six hours without noticeable loss of sod quality.

He attributes this performance, in part, to the strong and dense root system developed in the treated turf.

Five Years of Turfgrass Performance

Over approximately five years of using Lot 125®, Woerner Turf reported several additional benefits.

Longer Turf Harvesting Season

According to Mota, treated turf could be harvested:

  • Approximately 4–6 weeks earlier in the spring

  • Approximately 3–5 weeks later in the fall

This extended harvest window helped the turf farm continue production during periods when neighboring operations were limited by seasonal soil conditions.

Faster Turf Regrowth and Germination

After sod harvesting, Woerner Turf observed faster regrowth in treated areas compared with untreated areas.

The company also reported:

This can make large-roll sod easier for installation crews to handle while maintaining product quality.

Improved Sod Storage and Heat Tolerance

Mota also observed that treated sod could remain on pallets longer before showing signs of heat-related decline.

Maintaining turf quality after harvesting is particularly important during transportation and installation, when rolled sod can experience elevated temperatures and limited airflow.

Reduced Fertilizer Use

During its use of Lot 125®, Woerner Turf reported reducing its fertilizer program by as much as 25% while continuing to produce high-quality turf.

Supporting soil biology, root development, and nutrient cycling may help turf make more efficient use of available nutrients as part of a balanced fertility program.

Managing High-Salinity Irrigation Water

Woerner Turf also operates under conditions where elevated salinity can affect turfgrass performance.

According to Mota, the company believes its Lot 125® program has helped the turf tolerate some of the challenges associated with saline irrigation water.

Because salinity responses depend on water quality, soil chemistry, drainage, turf species, and management practices, soil and irrigation-water testing remain important components of any salinity-management program.
